In an oscillating breeze, use the median wind to position your boat against competitors if possible. Being to leeward and ahead of a competitor positions your boat for a gain in an upcoming header. Being on the weather hip of a competitor positions your boat to gain in an upcoming lift. Look to be sure there is enough runway for the shift to occur and the gain to be made without reaching a layline first.

Web Link US Sailing Portsmouth Numbers

This is the entire list of US Sailing DP-N numbers currently available.  We also use a few numbers from RYA, which is the UK authority on Portsmouth yardstick.  The numbers found there require conversion to  be used with USS numbers. There are several lists for differing boat types so look diligently. Note that special numbers are used for certain boat types based on local performance.  At this date we use modified data for Capri 25, Impulse 26, Day Sailor, RS Aero 9,and any boat not in the database.

Web Link Portsmouth Handbook by US Sailing

This US Sailing document gives the methodology behind the D PN numbers of the USS Portsmouth Yardstick.  Most of the ratings we use are the wind-indexed D PN numbers published by US Sailing.  We have a small subset of numbers which have been modified to match our experience, in most cases based on more than a season of data.  A few other numbers are based on UK Portsmouth numbers (RYA-PY), and for a couple of boats raw guesses.  Such Provisional numbers are more closely watched and adjusted.  Remember, all rating systems are intended to reflect the results of a well-sailed boat, properly prepared for racing.
